I'm looking for a change in my electical career and would like to know if any of you guys are involved in any work/careers etc away from the normal domestic/commercial/industrial stuff?

I am a QS at a company at the mo and need something else to ingnite my passion ! (Apart from the blonde secretary!! lol)

Any input would be welcome !

I crossed over into the computer networking scene back in 1979( quite by accident) and spent 25 years, until I retired. It was still in it's infancy when I started so it was all new and really interesting. There is so much wireless technology now that the scope may be getting narrower. Some of it can get a bit boring just connecting loads of wires to racks but I was lucky and worked on global networks and mostly fault-finding.

One other thing that may be worth specialising in is Domestic Automation. It seems that with broadband and cheap control technology there will be a big demand for this. It's used more and more to make a greener world.( that's the theory anyway). It is not so complicated once you get into it and many sparks don't get enough practice to get good at it.

Good luck, you never know intil you try.

I've started looking into full home automation as i'm finding after 25yrs of the same old, same old i've been getting bored.

also home cinema, music around the home all from a central hub etc......only really scratched the surface in truth so far as any info i've found has been 'take wire from x > y' etc but being a sparx i want more info as in why am i doing it and struggling to find schematics.

I've also started helping builders on house refurbs (not just electrics) which keeps interest going.

Looking into green/renewable stuff aswell (rainwater harvesting,heat/air source, solid fuel burners/heating systems)

i went into security systems, that side is always looking for sparks to cross over

Are the earnings any better than for electricians? I've always fancied getting into security systems, as I enjoy programming and setting up systems. Whenever I have searched for security jobs, the salary / hourly rates are generally poor.

depends i suppose,expierence/ company,id say the rates were between spark and approved spark

maintenance or commisioning? the compnay i work for do all sorts of work, but im currently working on a water contract. i get involved with all sorts from galv tube, sockets & lighting, to installing large 500Kva standby gennys, to fault finding control systems. its an interesting job, and i dont often get bored.

Its nice to be able to use my brains and not be stuck doing one type of job all of the time.

Something that most apprentices are not trained in these days it would seem so that's going to be a dying art.

Good riddance to pyro lol , spending 20 mins painstakingly making a end off just to find a molecule of moisture has buggered up your i.r tests.
whoever invented fp200 deserves a medal :-D

^^^^^ what do you think that would pay alarm man?£35k ish?just out of interest.
Btw to the op I'm in industrial control, plc, drives, instrumentation etc, very interesting field.

with the overtime and callout id say so,plus theres the other benefits like car/van phone lappy etc which can be a few grand saved if your not paying for them yourself

Thats not too bad then really and as you say with the other benefits quite a good package.van/phone's got to be £300 a month in costs easily.
I wonder if anyone on here will go for it?

Personally I'm into pleasure craft and canal boats and the amount and variety of electrical work you can find in this area is amazing - and it nearly always involves working somewhere nice!

with the state of the industry at the minute and will get worse before it gets better imo, good opportunity for a spark wanting a change from contracting etc to get into a national company, secure job, training etc
