Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so please bare with me if i'm in the worng place. Great forum BTW!

I've spoken with a number of "experts" and there seems to be much confusion wih this....

I have an outbuilding which is approx 40m from the main house. Power has been fed to the building from the main house and it has its own fusebox.

I now want to run CAT5 cable for broadband and phoneline but what do I need?

Some say CAT5 in conduit, others say just external CAT5 on its own and some say it must be SWA.

Also people have suggested its dangerous because of lightining strikes (I think we get about 3 a year in Dorset!). They mentioned something about it being dangerous to run copper between two buildings that are earthed differently or something!?

The majority of the cable will run underground but about a 1 metre section will run up a wall, so overground.

Do I need surge protectors to make it safe?

Many thanks in advance.

OD

Screened outdoor cat5e unfortunately not cheap. Run two lengths just easier as you can have a spare. Nothing to worry about with lightening etc won't make you susceptible to strikes. How you planning on terminating each end? Rj45 jack booted in to modem then pc or via modules?

I have done a similar thing at home.I have used heavy duty flexible conduit which has cat5e, alarm and coax for CCTV. If you go this route, I strongly advise that you pull the cable through the conduit before laying in the ground. I done it before, and it was still a difficult pull at approx 25m.

personally i would go with cat5e cable in pvc conduit.

I would agree, you can also use 20mm black irrigation pipe (LDPE) which is cheaper and more flexible so easier to work with.

You can get duct grade cat5 . I use a specialist cable supplier FS cables in Hertfordshire, excellent service, google them.
they can even have cables specially made up for you.

I've had standard cat 6 running between my house and garage in irrigation pipe for over ten years and it's worked fine in all that time.

You can get external grade cat5e and now they are doing external cat6.....If not burying and route is easy jsu cable tie to mains cable....if burying feed cable through a flexible conduit with a spare draw-wire......if using more than one PC you can use a switch at the shed / office end.....and if needing more than one phone postion you can daisy chain on old style phone plates...one phone line only...or you could split the phone line into two lines using two pairs for the first phone and two pairs for the second....

Mmmm sounds like a recipe for future problems and not compliant with the regs
