youve stripped too much cable and the earth and neutral are touching...no wonder
cut those cables shorter and rewire and sleeve the earth with earth sleeving and all youur problems will be solved

If there was a N to E short, then I'd worry about the wiring of the socket it did work in!

movement of the conductors inside the plug probably. whilst your at it, replace the cable with flex, down rate the fuse and put the transformer in a suitable enclosure with no single insulated cables showing.

Guys that worked! Awesome and hugely appreciated. I was going to put it in a wiska junction box. Should or does it need to be din railed in the box or not?

Lastly when you say no single insulated cables showing? The l and n will show some insulation but will be in the box.

Perhaps that ring main is not rcd protected (unlikely judging by the date of the cu) or the neutral and earth happened to not be touching at that point.

That would never have been found without the RCD.
I'm getting beyond worrying about peoples safety.

I'm not against people doing small bits like this but if they'd just read how to do it first...….instructions come with a new plug top.....and flex it.

What a load of tosh for a bloody door bell! Get one of these. Had it for over a year with no battery change yet and living out back of house in converted shed so had a good distance on it. Also sets the dogs off nicely so works on all fronts

So the cable I purchased never had any insulation on the earth but I suppose I should’ve put some on. Anyway I’m free to do anybody’s electrics now!
