Hi,

I replaced a plug socket today for the first time. When putting the live/neutral/earth wires in the socket, I noticed that the wires are not fully insulated where they come out of the wall. There is a small exposed piece of wiring which looks like it previously had masking tape around it. The rest of the wire is fully insulated apart from the ends that go into the plug socket. I could not see any problem with this as no one can touch that part of the wire behind the socket but was just wondering if there is any danger with this from an electrics point of view. It took me ages to fit so hoping there is no reason for me to reopen it all...

Thanks

If the wiring is normal twin and earth, the earth wire is a bare bit of copper with no insulation... there should be some green and yellow sleeving slid over it to cover it.

If the live or neutral copper is exposed, then this needs to be remedied

Thanks. Turns out it was the earth wire - based on what you are saying it does not matter if that wire is exposed.

Can you post a photo of it? That might help folk to comment more effectively.
Unfortunately I had already closed the socket up which took forever but I did eventually decide to reopen it to check and it is the earth wire that is exposed. According to littlespark that is not a problem. Thanks
