You should really have the knowledge to be designing and installing this in full compliance with BS7671 including the knowledge and equipment to test your work fully. This work should also be notified to building control depending on your location.

Old rule of thumb used to be 18 inch for buried cables

522.8.10 "...at a sufficient depth to avoid being damaged..." i.e. you need to risk assess each job. If a vehicular route, burial will likely need to be at greater depth than say in a flower border.

Its actually quite scary the amount of jobs over the past 2 decades where I have found cable buried less than an inch or so under the ground. But only ever had one job where an unsuspecting home owner has put a shovel straight through a buried swa , at least it made sure the mcb was in good working order....
