Hi Guys

My other half is just starting up and is after a bit of advice on pricing, as an example he did a quote for two outside flood lights on a domestic property with a bit of conduit work and estimating three quarters of a day labour for £190, the customer said it was more than she was expecting and that she would have to leave it, would you say this was overpriced or about right?

Yep welcome to the world of running a business these things happen with customers who have a £25K car in the drive £5k holiday £1k tv but baulk at £450 for a new CU I would not let one job scare you in a drive to the bottom.

The majority of jobs I get their fine because I am not vat registered so when he submits a price he should highlight that he is no vat registered

Hi,

Did you do any local market research about your competition? If you have done your homework properly you should know the local average day rate for your area and what your personal survival wage is. (How much you need to live on and cover your outgoings) From this you can work out what the target market will pay for the job Many times I go out to quote for a job and get told that such and such quoted a lot less. (Fine, I don't compete on price and if the customer wants the cheapest they can have Joe Bloggs from the pub to do the work on the side)
However, If the other electricians in the area are consistently beating you on quotes then you need to look at your pricing in detail. In my experience you find a lot of customers feel we overcharge as a trade. Yet they find nothing wrong in paying a garage 200-300 for a two hour service on their car. You have to emphasise your service as distinct and valuable. (I.E you have all the relevant insurances, trade qualifications, Part P membership etc)

Hope it goes ok for you, good luck.

Sophie just ignore him if you want to contribute to your partners business by helping him to set it up just ignore the man noises lol

I wish I could get my wife to help.. She is worse than the customer.. How much did you charge to fit that light?? WHATTTTTT?? that doesnt even pay to get my hair done....

If only I could use the washer........
