I am considering installing private AMR electric meters in a building with several flats fed by submains off a common supply. If possible I would like to read the meters via a wired comms network e.g. "M-Bus" as used for the meters for communal heating systems.

I think they may do this sort of thing in industrial sites with metered submains.

I am having difficulty searching for options as on-line discussion is mainly related to smart meters installed by electricity and gas suppliers, which use a dedicated wireless network.

Any ideas?

I think you may be better off talking with meter suppliers to see for which communications systems they can provide connections.
I think the majority are using the mobile networks as an existing infrastructure so the change to an M bus system may not be straightforward.

If you are intending on the metering being used for billing purposes it will have to meet MID approval and will need certification.

I understand your point for domestic supplies as the market is all related to smart meters installed by eletricity suppliers. But do you know if they use mobile networks for reading the meters in industrial sites with private submains?

Thanks for that tip - do you know where I can find these regulations? I have seen the regulations for communal heating systems but not for electricity.

Thanks RWJ - MID seems to be an EU standard for meters used for billing. Most meters you can see for sale by UK suppliers are advertised as being MID certified so it looks as if I should be able to cope with this fairly easily.

Richard: Eventually I found that M-Bus electric meters are available see e.g. DHZ-63A-M-BUS Single Phase Digital Meter (63A) (DHZ-63A-M-BUS) - http://www.syxthsense.com/metering/dhz-63a-m-bus/dhz-63a-m-bus-single-phase-digital-meter-(63a)/

But I also see that "Modbus" electric meters are available. These may be easier to interface with a computer-based data collection program as I can see that Modbus to ethernet adapters are available.

Has anyone worked on M-Bus or Modbus?
