Hello,

I am an electronics engineer by trade (mainly embedded software). I am looking to be able to carry out modification to my own home electrics and was wondering if there was a course/courses available to cater for this?

regards

Geoff

Yep do 2330 level2 then your 2330 level3 then a NVQ (2356)level 3 Then 2391 and your there fully qualified. But then you will need to register on a competent person scheme.

You're supposed to be qualified before undertaking 2391 so it's not required to be qualified. Also, even people working in England or Wales are not required to join a so-called "competent person scheme".

If you want a gold aprroved electricians card you need a all of the above!!
As for the competent person scheme its your choice. Depends what work your going to be doing as you said you would be working on your own home then all notifiable work will have to submit a building notice to the local authority before starting work and pay the fee around (£140) to have the work inspected.

Non-notifiable electrical work covers
Replacement of fittings such as sockets, switches and light fittings.
Replacement of the cable for a single circuit where it has been damaged.
Work that is not in the bathroom or kitchen and consists of
Adding additional lighting, light fittings and switches, to an existing circuit.
Adding additional sockets and fused spurs to an existing ring or radial main.
Installing additional earth bonding.

All other work must either be carried out by certified individuals/companies or notified to the local Building Control before work begins. this includes All new or modifications to the electrical wiring within bathrooms or shower rooms.
Installation or modification of electric underfloor or ceiling heating.
Garden lighting or power installation.
Other specialist electrical installation, examples being, Photovoltaic Solar and micro CHP.
Boiler Controls timers/roomstats ect..

However, the local labc will try and extract large sums of money from you even if you are superqualified, but not a member of a competent person sc sc sc scheme (nearly said scam). LAs should however be changing their pricing policy by Oct 1st so that "charges reflect the service they give". Which should mean that a competent person who does not require a service should be charged less than an unqualified DIYer. As far as i can tell at the moment they are charged the same

True, but you don't have to be graded an Approved Electrician to be qualified. Electrician grading is supposed to indicate that you are qualified, and in fact you are supposed to be graded an Electrician for at least two years before regrading to Approved Electrician.

try a 4-5year apprenticeship cng236 part 1 2 and 3 plenty of experiance on all sorts of instalations and covering all sorts of problems there is NO quick fix to becoming an electrician

Im an approved electrician and im looking at altering my embeded software what qualifications do I need ??

Appoligies for the curtness of my reply but My trade is becoming a JOKE with these 6month wonder courses churning out "Fully qualified electricians" the SCAMS NICEIC NAPIT Ect ect ect all have their own differing rules and requirements and dont get me started on about Kitchen Fitters 17th edd qualified
