i have recently just finished my 4 year apprenticeship, I passed my FICA test and completed my SVQ level 3 making me fully qualified. I see a lot of talk about part p and city and guilds courses to carry out and sign of domestic installations.

Are these extra courses I need or do I not need this ?

Also now that I am qualified if I go and do a job without a company I am still able to test and certify the installation ?

Part P is a scam...the idea is great, in getting people up to standard with 'part-pee' however, it's passed as a course and a qualifaction and it's not.

Part P is a building regulation, you do not need it. Just sign up to Elecsa (others available). Depends what the other city and guilds courses are, some are relevent some aren't. Care to expand on what they may be?

Anyone can sign off electrical work, it's just if anything goes wrong and you don't have 2391 and/or 2394/2395 then you will be heading to jail most probably.

So I don't need a company I can sign off work on my own that's good to know.

It's the ones you mentioned mark 2391, 2394/2395 ?

You can sign work off on your own yes, it's just without relevant testing qualifications you could be in hot water should anything go wrong.

2391 is now defunct, but 2394/2395 are highly advisable especially if you're wanting to work on your own. These qualifications have replaced the old 2391.

In order to complete and electrical installation certificate the requirement is that you need to be competent to do so.
If you were completing the certificate yourself, you would be working as self employed and you would be your own company (so to speak).

As Markc123 says proving your competence to sign off is the key if anything should go wrong, that is where the City and Guilds courses come in. You would then have a piece of paper saying you have been tested and are (presumably) therefore competent.

2394 is for initial verification of a new installation and completion of an electrical installation certificate.
2395 is for periodic inspection of an existing installation and completion of an electrical installation condition report.

As said above Part P not applicable in Scotland (though if you worked in England you would need to comply!). however you would still need to install to the Scottish Building regulations.
