I'm pretty new to this forum so hi to all.

I completed my 4 year apprenticeship in Ireland and Passed with Merit 3 years ago.
Iv been working/traveling in Australia for the past 2 years and am moving to London in Jan 2011.
I hope to get work in the industrial/domestic industry , although I'm speacialised in switchboard/motor control.
Was hoping for some advice regarding what will be expected in order to start working in London?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Many Thanks,

Rob

hi i have recently qualified in ireland too. i was just reading your post i wondered how did you get on and also what i have to ? should i am moving to london in the new year hoping to work as a spark i have just applied for the ni number so i have alot to do yet. i have sent emails to city and guilds and to jib and got no return i was hoping you could give me some advice thanks..

maybe you could get work doing factory maintainance beatrixtiff, if thats what your skillset is. as for contracting, the work is getting harder to come by, but is still there. you need to get a gold JIB card, and will have to find out how your quals match ours. I know your work is to the same standard, as i ve worked in dublin before. I cant see you having too many problems sorting your quals out, but good luck getting work.

Nope. BS 7671 only applies in the north of Ireland. ETCI Wiring Rules (4th Edition) applies in the south of Ireland. There are some differences between the two standards.

when i was there, for about 4 months in 2007, we wired to BS7671, and filled in certs to that too. no one said a thing, and all the work that other firms were doing seemed exactly the same as ours. are the ECTI rules based on 7671?

i was in spencer dock, dublin.

With the situation in Ireland you are going to find this happening a lot. Throughout Irish history the UK mainland as always been a place where the Irish turn to for work. I wish you luck guys but you may find that as we in the UK are in te "same boat" it might be a lot more difficult than in past days.

Unfortunately I'm not really an authority on the ETCI rules (don't even have a copy of them because they're too expensive!).

However I don't believe that they are based on BS 7671, although both documents would obviously largely be based on IEC documents and CENELEC documents so there is internationally a certain level of harmonisation of standards. I do know that there are certain important differences between ETCI Wiring Rules and the IEE Wiring Regulations, e.g. conductors must be identifiable throughout their length in the south of Ireland and cannot be oversleeved. I'm working with a number of sparks from Dublin, Laois, Longford and other places at present so if there is anything particularly you were wondering then I can find out for you easily enough.

Ha, I'm afraid il be keeping the 'liverpool thing', as for the gent in Salford, Manchester, I can understand why you wouldn't want me over ;)

Iv checked with some different companies in and around London regarding the C & G 17th edition, and apparently all I have to do is send my qualifications off to Naric to be transfered over and a one day 17th edition update course so be enough to get my 17th edition.

Hope even to just get a start by doing some maintenance work first and build on that.

Anyone know of the main switchboard/motor control companies in london?

Thanks for the help lads.

Rob
