im really struggling to get my head around this volt free contacts etc :(. i think im thinking too hard into it, is there any other really easy explanation to explain what it exactly means, as in for say a boiler or that?? please

Volt free contacts are simply a switch where whatever you put in you get back out from the other side. If you connect a live to one contact you get a live switched out through the other contact when the switch is made.

right. in a piece of equipment is a relay. the equipment in which it is installed will energise the relay by applying a voltage to it's coil, right? now if that equipment feeds a supply of any kind to the common contacts, it's not volt free. a volt free relay is one where you supply what input you want to the common to switch it to the N/O.

I shall say this only once and will not add any later comments;

A volt free contact is found on a piece of equipment (i.e boiler) when that equipment is first removed from it's box, fitted and connected to a supply.
The V-F contact's state (on or off) is controlled by an event in the piece of equipment, i.e boiler reaching operating temperature.

The moment that volt free contact is used to control another piece of equipment it will have a voltage on it, sourced from the second piece of equipment but it is still free of voltage from the first piece of equipment.

and if it ain't sunk in by now, the only option is a hammer.
