Designer has asked if I can do something similar to this picture.

shop sign.jpeg

Sign letters are standing a few inches off the background and have been lit on the reverse of each letter, supposably giving a 3D effect.

Has anyone done anything similar?

My thoughts is to use Led strip on the reverse of the letters, but that would be really fiddly with 15 letters I have been asked to consider!

Traditionally this type of signage is custom made lettering with custom made neon inside it. It costs a fortune and often it's installed on a rental agreement rather than sold outright. I suspect they're asking you to have a go because they've probably had quotes that have left them looking for clean underwear.

There are LED alternatives available but they're also kinda specialised and not as easy to manufacture as you may think, my advice would be to steer clear unless you're happy to go through a long and probably costly learning curve in order to do them regularly as part of your business.

I've done a few dozen signs for Primark in the past. They dont use LED strips, they use led pods (or whatever they are called)

If the letters are made up already and you have a work space big enough to fit the LED lights, go for it. But compare your quote to a sign makers quote first. If anything goes wrong with the letters eg damage in transit you will realize it is not worth it. Drilling the fixing holes using the template is a pain in the back side as well. May be best to pass this job on and just quote to install the supply.

Looks like LEDs are used in the photo - you can see the 'dotty' pattern behind some of the letters. Daz
