Restore Non-virgin TV

I currently have the previous owners' Virgin TV cable coming in from a satellite on the roof. As we do not have Virgin, we cannot watch TV from this, and there is no other cable. I would like a traditional TV cable reinstated. Presumably this isn't an uncommon thing, could anyone explain what needs to be done?

Virgin comes in from an underground cable, sky comes in from a dish. If you have a dish it may be sky? If the dish is still working and pointing at the right satalite you can use it to get freesat with a freesat tuner. Otherwise you need an arial for tv signals. If the cabling runs from your T.V to the roof or loft, you could have it connected to an arial up there and then the sky/virgin socket changed to an arial socket.

General question here: What are the inside aerials like? Like this one or the ones that fit in the attic. Are they any good?

That is a how long is a piece of string question.

As a general rule those amplified set top aerials are pretty disasterous. Frequently amplification is the last thing that you want with digital signals.

Aerials can work very well in attics etc and it is possible to do unamplified multi point distribution systems. As a general rule you do get more signal outside (no walls for signals to pass through and you often get advantages from height). However, a digital tuner only requires sufficient signal to work, there is no gain at all in having more than enough so if you can get enough signal in your attic then that would be the ideal place

I very much doubt it. Satellites are normally 23,000 miles above the equator.

So it turns out I have both a virgin box on the wall, coming from an underground cable like shaun1 said, and a dish. But no aerial.
