Hi guys. I have been thinking for a while that I really want learn the electrical trade but a bit apprehensive about making the leap. Obviously work is hard to come by at the moment, but by the time I qualify from an apprenticeship, it would be four years down the line and I would have learned a lot about scrapping for work and how important it is to be professional and a good businessman to keep work coming back to the company. I would be going into the trade from the start with the view of starting up myself, when I have gained enough experience; ideally in commercial/light industrial. I know that I am more than capable to keep up with the physical effort needed and go that extra bit to get jobs done and keep the customer happy, as they ultimately are your employer. No customer, no work!

-So do you guys think that it is possible a few years down the line to make a successful little venture if you have the brass and the right ethic? I get a buzz every time I think about it.

-When we are not in a financial mess, is it possible to earn a good wage working for yourself as an electrician? Did anyone actually make any money before the recession?

I live in Scotland by the way.

Really hope the experienced lads can give me some great feedback! Especially if you had the confidence to set up yourself!
Thanks
Steven

I'd do it again, definitely, but then I enjoy the work.
If I was looking to do it just for the money then I'd probably do something else instead.

yep love the work and the money tends to be better than other trades (although the gap is closing lately)

i would try a couple weeks experience if you can find it just to make up your mind that its what you want to do then go for it :)
