Discuss should i earth my steel garage work bench to the power point next to the bench. in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Should i earth my garage steel bench top,it is constructed of timber but has a 3mm steel top,
Hi - noting that things may be different in NZ, but up here your home’s garage bench work top would be “just a piece of steel” in the room and not need any action.

Can I ask what has prompted the question? Has a risk been identified?

to be pedantic, it wouldnot be earthed, it would be bonded, but onlyif it were proven to be extraneous, whichi doubt.

my concern was if it should suddenly come alive, whilst i am working with electrics,(safety first) bench is not bonded, was installed by previous owner, who was a small engine mechanic.apreciate your advice

the only way the bench top could become live is if a live conductor or electricasl part cameint contact with it. ask yourself what the possibility of that would be.

the purposeog bonding is so as in the event of an electrical fault (live to Earth), the benchpotential would rise to the mains voltage for the duration of the fault ( till the circuit protection activates ), a matter of milliseconds.

could always cover it in formica or self-adhesive vinly tiles.
