Hi, i have been asked to install an electric shower into a hairdressers for washing hair over a basin. When i enquired with Elecsa how far sockets have to be from the shower, they told me the 3m rule still applies? Is this correct, i feel this is totally a different situation to a room containing a bath or a shower & where would i take the 3m from. Any advice or idea's. I have thought about a partition.

Hum, there are no zones associated with basins, but "flexible" showers heads do make you think.

How close is the nearest socket?

Thanks Murdoch, i suggested a partition or screen the client wasn't impressed. I was there to do the work, it just occurred to me that with this being a shower does the 3m rule still apply. That when i telephoned the tech helpline. I thought the 3m rule applies because someone could use a hairdryer in the bath etc;

Hum, since the NICEIC merged with Elecsa, I would venture to suggest that the quality of the guidance from help line has dimished somewhat. De-skilling springs to mind.

As I said I would discuss and agree with the client and make sure that the "comments" section of the EIC is bullet proof with facts regarding customer accepting deviation from regs.

agree with murdoch. it's not strictly a shower as such, as no naked wet bodies standing under it ( unless it's a pervy salon).

And the Hairdresser

Sockets are not rcd protected. Shower will be. The irony of it all, is i have seen electric shower right next to socket in hairdressers & barbers loads of times. I think the way forward is a screen or partition. I was never comfortable with this job in the first instance as i know them. I have already got the customer to sign an agreement that the domestic shower has no guarantee as it is not commercial & was installing in 10mm for over heating of the cable. (8.5kw)
Cheers

1omm my arse. unless it's buried in insulation 6mm is more than adequate for 8.5kW.

I'd be recommending that this should be done in terms of staff and customer safety!

If the partition was installed, then i would only recommend the sockets are RCD protected. If no partition then they will have to be.

Cheers for advice appreciated.

partition or not. i'd strongly advise RCD protectio to the sockets. hairdressers are not renown for basic common sense.

There's hundreds of cases where water outlets are within 3m of a socket - most commercial kitchens will have flexible spray hose style sinks and sockets in close proximity, outside taps in gardens next to sockets, etc etc etc.

RCD the sockets as a matter of course, install the shower as sensibly as possible, write comments in the EIC, send bill, get paid, drink beer.

and don't offer the job up for your next NICEIC inspection!

Take notice of Rockingits post 17. You're over thinking things here and seeing problems that don't exist!!

Whatever did we do before the advent of RCD's?? lol!!
