Good morning

have just brought a basic showerlite showerfan from B&Q and I want to fit it in a down stairs shower and I want to know if it can be wired straight to the light switch which is a pull cord.

You more than likely won't have a neutral at the switch. Probably best to get a sparks to connect it up. Wouldn't cost much if you installed the lot and left it ready to be connected. Plus you would have peace of mind that its been done safely and compliant.

OP - when you look at the switch, the blue is almost certainly not the neutral!

if you have 2 browns and 2 blues in the pull switch, with the blues in a connector, not in the switch module, and 2 browns connected intothe switch itself, then you're good to go. if only 1 brown and 1 blue in the switch then you feed the fan from the light itself. don't forget to connect the earth wires. ( BLUE AND BROWN MAY BE BLACK AND RED if installation was prior to 2005/2006.) NB. you won't have overrun. if this is required, then better to employ an electrician.
