Is there anybody who can advise on the siemens step 7 software. Basically how to configure to get online for fault finding purposes. I have used the old DOS based software for step 5 PLC's but not the step 7. I've been GX Developer and RS Logix for the past 8/9 years and so I am a little rusty. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you coupling up to S7-300/400 or S7-200?

I'll assume S7-300/400 as you stated Step7 (although S7-200 is Step7 MicroWIN)

So you have Siemens Simatic Manager and the USB-MPI adaptor, or are you using the FieldPG?

Use this link Step 7 Connecting, Downloading and Uploading | PLCdev and ask if you get stuck.

Note to most:

Uploading sucks a copy of the program out of the PLC to your laptop/PC

Downloading sends the program to overwrite what's in the PLC

Most software warns and asks if you are sure before downloading. Some don't. Also ensure that you have enough battery life in the PG before downloading. Oh... and always save a copy of the original before making any modifications.

I am on the site tomorrow, hopefully calibrating at the Hmi interface level. I think it it is 300 and 400. There is a guy on-site using bootleg software on a major manufacturers kit. I will speak to the maintenance manager tomorrow with regards to purchasing the software required. I am fairly sure they will also need WinCC for the HMi software. The system also has connectivity to higher level systems so I am unsure as to whether I will need to understand communications software and drivers. ie connected to company servers. Any advice on siemens step 7 kit is welcomed.

Siemens = steep learning curve, great kit.

You'll have to be specific, I've used it weekly for the last ten years but I've probably forgotten more than I can recall.

If you just want to get online on Siemens you open the file you want, click "baustine" or blocks, choose any fb or function block, double click and you get the program in front of you.
Click the "spectacles" icon and,if connected properly you get online, there should be a green bar moving left to right at the bottom of the screen and everything "active" goes green,ie inputs into the function blocks etc.
Thats as basic as I can explain it but its really easy to use, much better than s5 but IMO not as good as logix although each to their own.

Right click on any function ie A 80.1 and a box opens offering you to "go to location",from there you can type anything you want into the search box and look for it,no matter what fc it occurs in.

Not sure if it's just relevant to the program's where I work but the = sign next to it means it's where it's "generated" from,ie what brings it on.

You can use a vat table or variable table to monitor several functions at once and even modify values from here.

I enjoy using it anyway, but like most things it's only as good as the person who programmed it.
