Hello chaps, hope you're all well.

I'm currently halfway through a re-wire of a 1950's bungalow with a recessed intake cupboard and an old skeleton consumer unit.

Obviously I need to replace this, I was wondering if any of you guys had installed one before, what's the best make, best place to get them from, handy hints etc.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)

we had one the other day at this old dance hall that was being used as a gospel church....well there they all were banging drums n tambourines mooching round in a trance whilst this guy belted out verse on a P.R.rig...but thats another story....this skeleton board (BS3036)...well it had been backed out of its original aperture and fixed to some timber on battens....this of course left all the singles they had used just exposed coming into the back of it...lol....well someone thought it was OK....

Haha, I'm sure they walked out of there and denied all knowledge. My dad installed one on a job a couple of years ago, made by Wylex, but said that the design doesn't fit those old cupboards. Guess i'll have to 'make it fit' in such a way to give it a cert *sigh*

they certainly make them still, I fitted one the other day, It was wylex but It looked a little shorter then the one pictured and I think was 8way, non-split load, I used RCBO's and got the unit from neweys (in stock).

Thanks for the input guys, might go for RCBO's to save space. Somehow need to get into the wall below this intake as I can't see the earth on the incoming cable (TNS). Yay.

The cupboards are different sizes and dependant on amount of ways you need can be a pain, I got out of it once by taking the whole board out and putting in a s/fuse and located the CU elsewhere so i could use a bigger board, bit more expensive I know but made a better neater job.

Another way is to mount a small metalclad board across the unit fixing to the 2 side plates (where the original skeleton fuseboard cover was fixed and bring the wiring into the back. Some of the narrower skeleton units are very deep.

what it needs is a carcass.....should come alive with a bit of juice in it...
