The paint can affect the plastic.I still dont know why they cannot be "painted " to blend them in a bit more ? Years ago I painted many a Sat /dish to blend them in etc
True... But I hate seen really stunning interiors having to have such ugly things stuck on ceiling !The paint can affect the plastic.

I know different plastics have different properties, but better not take the risk.

Because any paint getting in to the sensor could stop it from working. Or else the paint could just restrict the airflow through the unit.
Given the nature of detectors, I'd be inclined to avoid painting them even if sensor was masked off and airflow not restricted. Who knows what effect solvents could have on them over time.
