SPD Question

Hi Everyone.

Sorry if this has come up time and time again.


Soon to be installing a 3 phase submain and DB to very large garage with living annex above and lighting the external etc. (Domestic Dwelling).

Trying to get my head around this SPD jargon.

TNCS system, will i need to install a SPD at the 3 phase Isolator (type 1) and then a from DB a Type 2?

Done the Risk Assessment, and client has agreed with adding this protection into his property, and also wish to install to his 3 x single phase boards (1 on each phase) at a later date.

Yes.. both devices will require a protective device and should be connected as close as possible to the incoming supply.

Do you know of anywhere that sells Type 1+2 combined. Can only find 1+2+3 or 2+3

Is this an overhead supply? You can get a combined unit that will do the role of both type 1 & 2.

Is there a lightning protection system in place? i.e. rods, tape and finials etc? Then you will deffo need a type 1.

If it's an underground supply you could more than likely get away with a type 2 but you would need to consult manufacturers instructions.

Main cable from DNO is underground and the submain is clipped direct then after 10m it will be underground also.

Looking at the confusing blue big book, it looks like a tncs system 3 phase require type 1 at the main isolator and type 2 after.

There is no lightning protection, it's a brick ok wood garage, so no rods, stakes, or tape.

It's a 3 phase Submain from the house to the garage.

I've looked through the internet today looking for type 1 + 2 SPDs and couldn't find anything apart from 2+3s or 123s

If you have no lighting protection then you do not require a type 1 SPD

Try crown House Furze, ask for a visit from one of their experts, I would hazard a guess they would be very helpful especially in the early stages of this subject, five em a call I did and they were\ vert accommodating.
