hi,

Popped round in laws house last night as they were having power loss issues. As I pulled up noticed the utility guys on their road hard at work sorting it out. So out of curiosity I thought I'd check the voltage readings as they had power but you could tell the voltage was low.

I was getting about 90v between live and neutral,
90v between neutral and earth
and no reading between live and earth

the property is down a country lane but new pme supply installed within the last couple of years. New Cable installed down the length of the lane.

1st they were looking at the transformer located on a pole then moved there attention to what i presume must have been a joint further down the road.

my feeble brain is trying to figure out what would cause those readings? is it broken earth or neutral?

cheers

I think I would have asked the utility guy's on the ground rather than asking on here for a answer. It's possible you would not get the right answer with remote guesses as to the problem

The fact you measured 90volts N-E on a PME supply is a lot more worrying to me than the issue that caused the missing phase.

didn't get a chance to ask them in the end as I had to shoot off. But problem seemed to be resolved later that night after they isolated for a a few hours.
Wasn't looking for definitive answers just curious to what would cause those readings.

So you went to the in-laws to sort out their power issues and achieved nothing as you didn't have the time to stop and ask the guy's in the know

But problem seemed to be resolved later that night after they isolated for a a few hours.

No doubt the utility men working down the road had to isolate to carry out the repairs

The fault down the road!!!!

Love it. Enough time to take voltage readings but not enough time to ask the guy down the road. If you don't like the In-Laws.... fair enough. Just pop round to gloat.. "Yeah, you got no power... haha, see ya later". Im not that keen on my in laws either, respect, I like the thinking.

Yeah, I've gotta show some sort of compassion....but not too much

So you walked away from a perfect learning opportunity, well done!

You could have found out precisely what caused the symptoms you observed, but no you came on here for a group of random guys to make wild guesses.

The worse bit is you could have passed on the information had you taken the time to find out what the fault was. First hand experience in a situation like that is hard to come by. By passing on knowledge others benefit.

61 posts to your credit, 17 of them asking questions………

Your one chance to give something back and you were too busy! Thanks!

You could have brewed up with that, take about 2 and a half times longer like.

6 1/2 times longer surely, unless you've got a constant-current kettle. Actually, where is my coffee? I'm sure our mains is at normal volts but it's taking a long time to appear...

Agree with Marvo - if the supply is PME, it takes some doing to get an N-E voltage like that at the consumer's terminals - with a normal TN-C-S connection it's more or less impossible. OP, How sure are you that there's not a polarity reversal somewhere there?
