Discuss telephone extension in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

You only need 1 pair now for a telephone line the 3rd wire was used before we had the digital exchanged as I was informed by UNG on this very forum :)

When PSTN came out (plug socket termination network)the master box had the capacitor witch made the ringing for secondary/ slave sockets on terminal 3.

PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network which is the aggregate of the world's circuit switched telephone networks that are operated by national, regional, or local telephony operators, providing infrastructure and services for public telecommunication and not as your definition which may be some internal BT slang

Terminal 3 also stopped the bell tinkle when dialling on the older phones. With the use of ADSL / vDSL for internet connections it's use is not recommended due to inference that reduces available bandwidth in fact if you or BT install an i-Plate at the master jack this will disconnect terminal 3 to the rest of the internal phone network

Yes it is known as PSTN regarding telly sockets in bt,worked for them long enough,so you googled the term ahhh? so clever.

If its for a new sky install and the client will be getting new sky boxes then you wont need BT points anymore. They are now all wireless.

If its for older sky boxes then exactly what was said above :bucktooth:

Only took the definition from the net for the fullest reply and give a better understanding to the others on here and obviously yourself. I actually knew the term 40+ years ago when everything was hard wired as my dad worked for BT's predecessor the GPO knew quite a few engineers back then who taught me quite a bit. Spoke to one of my brother's earlier who spent many years with BT on cable jointing and he had never heard of your term for PSTN. So it wasn't actually all that clever after all
