Hi, DIYer here,

I'm replacing an old outdoor light. The old one had N, E, L and L1. The new one has N, E, L.

I guess this is a common question, how do i wire up the 4 wires coming out of my wall to the 3 available in the new light fitting please?

Attached is a pic of the old light fitting

Thanks in advance for any helpIMG_20221015_130605819~2.jpg

First fìt correct colour sleeving. Your supply cables should be wired as per instructions. The conductor into L1 should be capped off unused.

Seen plenty of 'incorrectly' coloured wires with no sleeve at all, but that's the first time I've seen a grey neutral deliberately sleeved brown!

Old fitting seems to be a sensor type. L to sensor, L1 would override.

As above, safely terminate the brown from L just into a connector. L1, black with brown sleeving to L of new light, and grey to N. Replace brown sleeve with blue on the grey.

Obvs, green/yellow is earth to E

Isolate at CU, as the brown will be live even if switch is off.
