my son has just moved into a new house and has asked me to have a look at a problem with his lounge lights.
his lounge has a switch on one side of the room (call it main switch) and on the other side is a double switch. one switch is the downstairs switch for the landing light which works fine the other switch is WE ASSUME, the second switch for the lounge (call it slave switch). the problem is this slave switch does nothing. i have investigated the configuration which is as follows
main switch - a single cable comprising 2 x red cores, 1 x core and earth. common is red wire permanent live; L1 when the switch is off is live and L2 is at zero potential. with the switch on L1 remains live; L2 goes live (and the lights come on).
at the slave switch this is where it gets hard there is a myriad of red and black cables feeding the two switches - concentrating on the switch in question common has a red core and L1 and L2 have black cores. i am therefore somewhat mystified. obviously you can't have a cable with 2 reds and a black at one end and 2 blacks and a red at the other. is it possible that the dual switch has some sort of cross over between wiring. any guidance would be helpful
