Hi

I have a shaver socket in my bathroom - new build flat, socket has 115v & 240v.

I have purchased an LED sensor nightlight which has a regular uk 3 pin plug, & I was wondering if I could use a European adaptor to plug the nightlight into the shaver socket. Nightlight has following details:

Input - AC220-230v 50Hz
Max 1.8W

I have plugged it in using a European adaptor to test the theory, and the light works, but I want to confirm this is safe, as I would plan to leave it plugged in for most of the time.

Thanks

Laura

Your weak point would be your adaptor so making sure this is high quality to begin with would help. It would effectively be like having a toothbrush permanently plugged in as the transformer only powers when it has a load.
Good quality items to be used and make sure the weight of the adaptor and light don't cause damage.

A European adaptor is not likely to fit the shaver socket correctly even though it may fit, this along with the 13A plug may place undue stress on the shaver socket. As for loading the shaver socket should incorporate a device to prevent excessive current draw and should cut out but it isn't a good idea to push it to this limit. The cut out device does not sense the current draw but the temperature of the internal isolating transformer which will increase in temperature as the current draw rises. Shaver sockets vary as to their power capacity, MK manufacture 200ma and 400ma devices and based on this information it should operate your light but personally I would not recommend what you intend to do.
