Hi,

I've got the below...

- 40558 Varilight XDQPG4 4-Gang PowerGrid Faceplate White
- 90137 Varilight Z3PGRID4 4-Gang PowerGrid Gridplate
- plus 4 switch modules

The switch modules fit the grid plate fine, no issue here.

Literature says grid plate fits into a standard UK double wall box, OK the screws line up, but...

The metal grid plate has to be fitted to the wall box first as you need access to the screws. (then you fit the white exterior plate, which conceals the screws)

However, you've nothing to screw the grid plate against as it's smaller than the wall box and will simply slip inside. With a conventional switch, you'd be tightening the whole switch up against the plaster, as it's larger than the wall box.

The only way I can see to do this is to fit the grid plate minus the white plate, estimate the depth to screw it into, then fit the white plate and see if it's against the wall.

Even then, the whole thing moves around. The white plate is just so flimsy - it's cosmetic, not structural. The screws to fit the white plate to the grid plate are tiny and the whole thing will deform if you try and tighten it up to hold the grid plate in position.

To me it looks like it needs a special wall box or some sort of insert, but I can't see one listed anywhere.

Have I missed something about how to fit these Varilight grids?

Thanks,
Jim

The grid plate should press on the tabs into which you are screwing, once it is tight against these it should be stable and then you screw the cover plate on top.
Unless your back box has been set too deep into the wall this should be OK.
