Hi all

Basically I'm wanting the best performance for online gaming (Xbox) this is connected straight into the hub ports we also use other devices such as wifi for phones, am I best buying a switch for better performance and running all through it

Hi, I think you'll find that the ports of the "Virgin Media Super Hub" are switched ports (check the Virgin site for confirmation).
All the data traffic (destined for the Internet) from all your devices will be going through the built in router / firewall. The only reason to buy a switch would be to increase the number of ports you need for "wired devices".

If you want the best performencd then build your own.

An off the shelf router cant compete against a homebuilt router with 4gb ram running untangle or pfsence are popular

If your Xbox is connected directly to the hub its unlikely that anything you do in your home will help. What's your broadband speed like?

on the super hub configuration there is option to use it as a basic cable modem, its disabling wifi and using only one rj45 socket. connect it to a proper network router and see the difference.
for proper router you can use many cheap off the shelf devices, flash the firmware with modified linux.

I don't know about all this online gaming business, but as a very soon to be ex-customer of Virgin Media I can tell you that it is over-hyped, over-priced absolute crap and is anything but good value for money.
