Hi All,

I've been called to fit & connect led strip lights in the living room. Full rewiring has been completed recently and two switched T&E cables were left in the ceiling cavity to wire led strip lights

Client told me that electrician who did full rewiring in this house supposed to do led as well but couldn't complete it as he left country for personal reasons.

When I checked voltage for one T&E leg I had 210v. I've connected ac adapter to it and it won't work. The other T&E leg was fine at 230v and adapter was working too.

Apart from cable length and size what else can cause voltage drop in the cable?

Thanks in advance

Are you saying that the live-neutral voltage on one cable was 230v and the live-neutral voltage on the other cable was 210v?

210 on one leg means a problem, most likely a poor connection somewhere, best you get an electrician to sort this out, as it will invove going into the main board. I am surprised that the power supply will not work correctily on 210, most smps will work quite happily off a wide range of input voltages.

I've tested voltage between L and E as well at same time and it was still 210V

Yes, I would expect AC converter should work under this voltage but it wouldn't even turn on.

The client is looking now to arrange another electrician to produce Electrical Installation Certificate for his property as the other spark who did rewiring job did not issue one.

Hi Igor, what type of Meter were you using when you checked the Voltage?

What I've established so far it was two T&E cables each controlled by separate switches in the room.
Electrician left them so it can be used to connect two sets of LED strip lights in different room sections.

I'll be returning there this weekend to complete LED fitting job using good T&E.

I thought you were the electrician.

I told client before I'm not signing off someone else work except my own, especially full rewiring. Just will do LED lights.

I haven't checked voltage at the supply side but will do on weekend just to be sure. Voltage in other room lighting circuit were OK.

Thanks for all who replied

Have you checked voltage at the switch?

If good start working back.

Sounds like pinched insulation, measures 210V but will dissipate to 0 under load?

Edit, perhaps try testing the voltage with the driver and LED connected.

The voltage goes down to around 80V under the load of LED transformer when I measured it.

Thanks for the advice
