Hi all,

I am new to posting on this forum but have been reading posts with interest for some time. I have just finished my 2330 L2 and waiting for L3 to start in Sept. I am wanting to buy a reasonable multimeter at a reasonable price. I know everyone suggests Fluke, but at this stage I dont want to spend that kind of money? I would appreciate any advice?

Thanks

Well, with fluke you have a reliable brand, support and in my opinion good value for money. Don't go for the cheap 20 quid ones from Aldi or Lidl.

Another good choice is AVO, damn good kit as well.

And don't buy one from B&Q.

Ive ; like most on here have had loads and currently use a megger, but my favorite till it died was a Di Log , temp probe the lot. I swear I will get it fixed one day when I get round to it lol. Di Log are not a lot of money and mine lasted for years an years . The Megger is mint too but has a tantrum when the batteries go low. to be honest with you all the stuff mostly made in China I think it is much of a muchness. I'm talking about digi multimeters here as I presume that is what you are asking about.

Thanks for such prompt replies, yes its a digi one i want.
What do you think about
1) Draper 78997 Auto Ranging on Amazon down from £62 to £37
2) Extech EX330 Auto Ranging on Amadon for £44

There are so many about. I want to spend up to £50 for now, and I know not to buy rubbish cheap ones!!

Have you considered ebay from a respectable seller? Or, if you can wait till tomorrow, I might have a fluke for sale, got to find it first, don't know what model.
It hasn't got a current range though. They were given to us but without a current rangge they where no good to us so they bought us another one and kindly allow us to take the old ones home.

Trouble with those auto ranging ones is inductive influences, then you wish you had afluke with choice of manual / auto range.

Im not in a rush, preferring to seek some advice before spending!!

A note of caution:
A multimeter is a poor subtitute for a Mutli Function Tester (MFT) when testing electrical installations, because it does not have the specialist tests or the necessary safety features required. The most dangerous situation is mistakenly attempting a voltage test with a multimeter switched to a current range. The poor protection of multimeters and their leads in such a situation has caused the meter to become a molten/vaporised mass, plus in many cases caused severe electrical burns to the operator, lung damage and even blindness due to arc flash-over.
However, with the above in mind, if a multimeter meets your need, then the following test equipment companies are worth checking out.
Value for Money Multimeters:
Look for value for money products from the following budget instrument makers:- Amprobe (part of Fluke group), Alphatek/Metrel (part of Metrel Group), DiLog, Extech (part of Flir Group), Kewtech and Uni-Trend (Quality Chinese manufacturer, badged Uni-T, widely available on Fleabay, Maplin and elsewhere). Dilog, Metrel, Extech, Kewtech and other meters are available with 5% member discount from Test-Meter our forum sponsors.

A decent Fluke multimeter should last you 10 years +

A Fluke 114 is around 100 quid and the Fluke 115 is around 115.

Watch out for fake flukes that seem to be on fleebay. They could potentially blow up in your face,I remember seeing a video of someone testing fake meters and they were BAD!

I have 2 fluke 71s that must be about 26 years old one I never use and keep as a spare but one thing to note both have rubber holsters a must for any multimeter as I have dropped mines a few times and without the holster it would be in bits

If you are not in a hurry to buy, save up as much as you can to buy a decent (new) one when you can. Buy cheap/2nd hand - buy again later.

Don't forget that a 2nd hand MFT unit would need calibrating too.

I purchased a used Fluke 787 online about 4 yrs ago for 1/3 of what a new one was at that time & it's as good as the day I got it.

what type of feild are you working, i have a cheap china import i use when tring to fix household electronic gadgets but use a multifunction tester and dedicated volt tester to do domestic work, never realy had a use for a better one.
