Yesterday, I was doing an EICR on common parts, small block of flats.

The stairs lighting was on it's own circuit and totalled 8 light fittings. All were maintained with control gear having the appearance of being in the microwave on Full Power for 15 minutes. No big deal.

It was the cabling in the MCB that really caught my attention. 8 x 1.5's came out of it. They had been divided into 2 groups of four. Then twisted together.

Who? I don't suppose that matters.

Why? Now that really is the question.

Goes against the good workmanship regs that surely. I don't believe any MCB is specced to be suitable for 8 conductors

Workmanship, manufacturers instructions, 560.9 (or whichever one is for EM systems), communal lighting in a council/housing association I assume? EAWR breaches there if so ?

My colleague has found the answer. Two lights on each floor wired in a ring final (?)

This leaves 8 twin & earths at the board for a 6 amp lighting circuit.

My original question stands. Why?

Is it a fairly new board compared to the installation? Maybe there was a bank of switches and been done away with?

Doesn’t explain lights in a ring. Maybe something to do with volt drop up to top floor instead of a radial
