I'm a home owner, not an electrician. I have a window ac unit that draws 7.5amps. All I have in my garage is an outlet that's on a 20 amp breaker. Will 20 amp work or do I need to replace it with a 15amp Breaker?

Could you explain to me how breakers work. 20 amp breaker on a 20amp outlet. The cord to my ac unit is 14awg. 14 awg can handle 20amps? And the ac uses 7.5 amps, wouldn't that destroy the ac unit since I have 20 amps going to it? Thank your help.20 amps will work for what you need and good luck
If it will make you feel better you can change the breaker to a 15 amp, since the FLA is only 7.5 amps. The breaker is there for 2 reasons with one being overcurrent protection and the other is for short circuit protection.
