I have an older house that has 10/3 run to a box at the dryer location and I would like to put in a 4 prong outlet. My problem is that the 10/3 does not have a ground wire. Only Black (hot), Red (hot), and White (neutral). Can i use the existing wires and just add a ground wire grounded to the water pipes? Thanks.

Or would it be better to use a 3 prong outlet with no ground?

not conversant with US regs./code, but i'd be inclined to run in a new cable 2 hots, N, and ground. do it once, do it right. in the UK it is against regulations to use utility pipes as earth/ground.

John I hate to tell you this but once you start working on a dryer you have to install a 4 wire cable to bring it up to today’s standers. Good luck with your project
