Hi Dave thanks for the response yes there is an isolator above the bathroom door which turns off the lights and presumably the fan when it works. I have tried unlinking the blue wire covered with the brown and putting it into the switched live and it stops the lights working then.

Ok John, although it's clearly not your fault this wiring has been badly executed. It's most odd for the permanent feed ,switch wire and switched live + neutral to the light to all congregate at the fan.
I'd suggest getting an electrician in to sort it out, an hours work at most.

It does not look as if the original fan was wired to be a timer fan just to come on and off with the lights.
You could readily wire your timer fan to operate in this way by linking the fan timed line and permanent line terminals.
To change to timer function may well be possible but it would be necessary to be sure of the functions of the existing wiring which would be best accomplished from an on site perspective.

Ok Dave so there is nothing I could do to get the fan working myself?

Normally it's very simple John but it definitely needs some tidying up - those yellow crimps on the permanent lives and CPCs need re doing with proper terminal blocks or Wago type push connectors as that's a proper bodge and those fan terminals are generally very small.

Seems an odd way to wire a fan as if there is a separate switch or pull cord for the fan?

No Anthony, whoever wired it originally has taken the supply to the fan first then the light - the brown which is with the sleeved blue will be to the light. Very odd way of doing it,possibly a DIYer.
