Hey all. I'm an electrician currently working in Victoria, Australia. I'm working in the elevator industry on modernisation projects. I'm moving to London soon to work and live with my girlfriend. If someone on here has any advice as to what courses I would have to undertake to become recognised in England it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Matt

I think everyone here is going to tell you to stay in Aussie mate!! Your going to have a hard time finding a job, even after you have gone through any training that you require. The UK unlike Aussie has been hit hard by the world recession.

Let's see what other's in the UK have to say....

Second that especially with all the eastern european labour coming in and working for peanuts.

Damn right. Its not easy at moment geezer. You have got to specialise, be at the top of your game and have as many permits and ticket an possible. But still it a struggle.

Hello and :welcome2:

(another post nearer to my 3000+ club membership :wink5: )

......... but to answer your question: stay where you are bonny lad, it's like a bad joke over here.

I've had enough of the UK and my Canadian Visa is currently going through. I'd rather live in -20 in Calgary for 6 months of the year than spend another day here. So I hope you can stay in Aus. But to be fair, I've been quite busy so not moving because of lack of work. Just the general turdness off the UK. Oh and David Cameron

If I were you I would move your lass to Aus and keep on soaking up the sun

We are moving over to travel and work at the same time. We have had this plan for a while. Hopefully I can get some work with an elevator company. Are the any restrictions on me to do electrical work? Are there any bridging courses I can do to better my chances of gaining employment?

Cheers

As your are in a specialist trade you may pick up a service engineer position. Goolgelift companys in the UK and give them a call. You will need to sit the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regs I would think as a minimum.

There are a handfull of Aussie troops were I am working. All good guys compared to some of the other muppets around here.[/QUOTE]

Thanks mate. That's pretty much what I was after. I suppose there are health and safety courses
and construction induction courses I'd have to do.

Yeah most aussies are pretty laid back and easy going...

Surely my qualifications here would at match the standards there. Which company would decide if it does. Thanks for all your info

Compared to some that's coming into the electrical industry in the UK these day's Matty, i'm pretty sure your hard earned qualifications will trump the standards you'll find there, let alone match them!!

Perhaps you didn't know, that you can become an electrical domestic installer in the UK these day's after completing a 17 day course!!! Anything like that in Aussie?? ...I think NOT!! lol!!!

Potentially even 5 days, given that the scam's only ask for Regs.

Get in touch with "Down under Tradies" based in West London. They specialise in pre travel training for antipodeans, so that when you get here you can sit your 17th edition (our regs) and CSCS (health and safety) exams pretty much straight away. This type of training is definitely aimed at qualified electricians who know their stuff but need to either upgrade or exchange their qualifications as opposed to newcomers who haven't a clue. If you have a portfolio bring it with you as it can be used as evidence of ability.
