Wrong Breaker Tripped

Oven element broke in half and started sparking even when all controls were turned off. Resident manually switched range breaker off. I replaced the element with oem replacement. I made sure all wiring was secure and the element connections are not making contact with the back cover panel.Now I switch the range breaker on and the main breaker to entire apartment unit trips. Why didnt the range breaker just trip instead of the main?

Alex you have a phase to phase short circuit. You need to check your wiring on you range the wiring is touching and breaker has interruption ratings of 10K and some are rated 20K the lowest one should trip first. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Sorry it took so long to reply

That's that whole selective coordination issue that is becoming more of a problem. If an upstream breaker has a lower interrupting rating it will trip first. Electrician friend of mine tripped a service main of a hotel by cutting into a 120v circuit.

So I did a bunch of investigating and figured a gound short at the element in the oven and also in the control board.So I replaced the whole range. Currently looking into SCCR info, it seems GE doesnt just list it on appliances at least not on the label tag and GE tech support doesnt even know what SCCR means. I was told that maybe this model is not compliant with 2008 Short Circuit Current Rating Guidlines.

Alex that range is compatible and should be within of the 2008 SCCR I think you will be OK and what happened to you old range is very very rare. Good luck my friend

SO, have oven elements always broke in half because every one that I have replaced in the last 2 years has either looked like something from a glass blower or was broke in half. This is the first one that also had a bad control board.

Alex if you had a multimeter you could read continuity between the element, it will probably read high resistance, but you could check to see if it’s broken
