Can anyone advise or explain the correct procedure to carry out the above tests on a megger 1720?
I recently purchased a megger 1720 and thought I would have a play with it at home before taking it on site. When carrying out z tests it give you a choice of 2 and 3 lead hi and low test all giving you different results I had a quick look in the distractions but thought you guys and girls may have a bit more experience and be able to explain in pracical terms.

I have an MFT 1731.

For Ze (for measuring Ze, PEFC and PSCC) you should use the two lead hi current mode. For Zs you should aim to use the two lead hi current test if the circuit is not RCD protected and the three lead low current test if it is.

The three lead low current test is not as accurate as the two lead hi current, but it shouldn't trip RCDs (which can adversely affect the test results which is why you'll find information in various threads here about bypassing RCDs and using the two lead hi current test).

Hope that helps.

I have the Megger 1741 however I used a Fluke in the past and they are both perfectly good testers and the Minions have been done to death in merchandising. The instructions should be useful regard both "LO" and "HI" tests for L-E and L-N.

meggers bfore the 1700 series used to need 3 wire test for no trip. just bear in mind that, due to the much lower current used in any no-trip test, the results may not be accurate due usyally to some contact resistance which is overcome when performing a hi current test.
