Just bought an old house (about 30-40 years old) with a separate shop building. I am in the process of replacing old fluorescent fixtures with new LED fixtures. The lighting is controlled by 2 switches, one at the back door and the other at the front. The wiring appears to run from one switch, through several lights (wired in parallel) and finally to the other switch. The circuit appears to be wired entirely with 14/2 Romex. All references I find online seem to suggest that 14/3 Romex between the switches is required by code. The circuit works properly as is.

Do I need to modify wiring to comply with code?

Since it’s just controlling lights then yes it should be 14/3 if they are using 3 way switches on each end Not sure how it is wired but if it is working correctly the I would turn off the power and look and see if in fact it is 3 way switches.
