Movement on Plug Pins

Hi all,

Just looking at starting some testing since newly qualified, don't know if this is a stupid question or not. Is there an allowed tolerance for movement on the pins of a plug?

Obviously if they move a lot that's no good but what if they move a little when you wiggle them? Just curious as you can get the plugs which have fold in pins like on apple chargers but it made me think about fixed pin ones. I have looked at a few different plugs and some wiggle and some don't but all pass through a tester. I guess it's more just me worried about possible arcing from the movement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do the plugs have the BS markings on them? Do they have shielded pins?

Hi, they're just the standard BS1363 Type G 3-pin plugs, that you find on every day items.

Just wondered if they might have been some of the dodgy ones you sometimes see on cheap equipment.

To be honest I think you're just going to have to go on experience. If they really do feel very loose and you feel they aren't going to fit well in a socket then I'd probably replace them.

I'm not sure I've ever seen any that bad though

Thanks, I did try and look around but couldn't really find much so figured I'd have to use judgement. I will be opening the plugs up anyway so I'll be able to see any loose wiring but better safe than sorry! Thanks for the help.

There's probably something in the BS1363 document, but to be honest I don't think many people will have bought that!
