I have a detached garage with a 60 AMP subpanel which has lost power. I traced the failure to the wire running under the walkway via conduit (about 15 ft) and can see it fried on the detached garage side. I suspect age, critters and or water got to it and shorted it out.

If I replace the wire from the sub-panel back across the walkway what is the requirement for creating a junction at the point it leaves from the main house? I'm hoping that it's not required to do a single intact new run all the way back to the main service box in the house. thanks.

So this was resolved. I used a line tester to see if I had power across the breaker on the main box in the house. Breaker tested fine. Then I checked power along the line and found that I had power exiting the house but no power entering the detached garage. I pulled the cover off the conduit box and saw it was burnt through. Mice (2 carcasses :) ) Junction box on the house side, new wire to the sub-panel and we're in business.
