Lovely. Looks in great nick.🙂
Maybe 'whoever' should have changed that beauty when they carried out the rewire........60 or 70 years ago. 😉

That circular wooden plinth would have been the base for an old toggle switch. Has no holes drilled for the wires so must be a joint box, never seen that before.

Or perhaps it's just been kept for show.
If you go to Beamish Museum, in the 1900s town, in the cellar of the bank, you'll find this.
I do wonder if it's genuine, or just random bits tgrown in for show.

There can't be that many houses left with all the original wiring and original bakelite switches and fittings still in active working order. Some of this wiring must be over 100 years old now...

At our church we have "modern" wiring - imperial T&E (or T no E on the lights), but they used the old switches where visible to fit in with the aesthetics. Not that there would have been any lecky when it was built 200 years ago, that only arrived in the 70s.

Are they actually prohibited even if fitted when they were allowed, or prohibited to be fitted ?
This site says they aren't retrospectively banned, so as a matter of ISITEE, it's not a fail to see one - even if it wasn't legally fitted in the first place.
Another site backs this up, but they "recommend" they be replaced.

Last ISITEE code of practice I believe recommended that plugs with non sleeved pins were swapped, but it was not mandatory to do this. Not sure about the current revision 5 of the COP though as I don't have it.

OMG Paul, great photo.

Leaving the top/left hole open to IP is ridicules… there’s 4xFixing positions.! So USE them.
Over use of open grommets is a Waste of products.

The only thing missing is a ‘Hair Clip’ or 6” nail.

Luv these pics to show my apprentices.

👍👍👍👍

Maybe your apprentices will notice the actual wiring connections.

A little depressing when you see stuff posted on here as antiques, that you've fitted as new.
Later versions of these switches has similar switch mechanisms inside to modern plate switches, but earlier versions had a totally different underslung over centre mechanism that gave a fast make and fast break, which was suitable for switching DC as well as AC.

New extension and old house refurbished. Builder moved service head himself and made the access hatch sooo small everything is inaccessible. Electrical work was done by a sparky 😳 Cable outside on the roofing tin was found to be live and just taped up.

Builders had a melt because the works been callled out!

OK I will bite, what are those grey oblong terminal blocks above the RCBO's, not part of them as they don't line up, been out of the game for a while, I know the orange thing on the right, but those blocks are a new one on me. (surge protection maybe ?)

Slight angle from centre of the photo.
You live and learn, eh.;)

What’s that small one in the middle with the white push button? ;)

Hell, I can go into any farm cottage around here and see similar, if not worse.
I agree about farm properties, I seem to be spending a lot of time moving between them in Wales at the moment.
The photo was apparently a holiday let on the Isle of Sheppey.
I was a little bit intrigued if there is a meter upstream or if that is the overhead supply coming in with a dodgy DIY TN connection....

I think there are more caravans than house's on the Isle of Sheppey, the favourite holiday and week end retreat for the folks from the East End of London.

Before anyone has a go about predigest I was born within the sound of Bow Bells which are in St Mary Le Bow church in Cheapside near St Pauls so more the City of London that the east end.

I have a strange fondness for the East End as I've seen more of it than many have. I used to cycle from Leyton to near Orchard Street W1 on a daily basis. Nicest in the summer when Victoria Park was open until dusk. I started during the fuel strikes, and liked it so much I kept going when the cars returned. I kept it up for about 3 years until I came too close to death on Old Street roundabout for the 3rd time and figured the tube had some benefits, like increased life expectancy!
