    Today's job.

No previous Initial Verification testing carried out on this property then, or pencil whipped from the van lol!

    IR 35

IR35 is to weed out people who wrapped a 9-5 on a Friday only to reappear the following Monday as a Ltd doing the exact same job. I've had similar conversations recently with clients.

    IR 35

Just get a couple of other smaller type jobs coming in as well if you can, then technically you are not subbing to one contractor and effectively a company in it's own right. Do you provide your own tools, insurance, vehicle etc? If you do then you should be outside the scope of IR35.

Operation of a three phase UPS

Can you throw it back to whoever commissions / maintains the UPS, I am thinking this is a Eaton or Schneider or similar type setup? You could of course isolate everything 'upstream' and complete your voltage checks effectively with no load. Likely to be a shutdown of the essential equipment!

Earth fly lead size & requirement

Use the adiabatic equation, but as you have a core as cpc and the armour a 6mm flylead from the earth tag would be my approach.

Help tracing ring main in singles

I would try plugging in a known load such as a heater and use a clamp meter to trace the correct cores. It's not scientific, but its a method I've used before when tracing single core neutrals in a DB.

    Terminating 35mm

What size is the main switch or OCPD going to be in the board?

    Jib pension

Hi, I don't think there is a set %, it is normally down to the company. There are however set government % that an employer must pay in. Better off sticking some of that on the Cheltenham races, more chance of a return!

    High Zs

It does seem unusually high. Did you give it the ole R2 test as well from the MET?

    4mm radials

From the way you have described the installation methods, the only thing I would watch out for is the 'grouping' Cg factor and that the circuits are spaced from each other in that void. Even still there is an element of diversity for the expected loads on these circuits. Personally I believe...

    Tray and basket bonding

Is there a specific Client spec for the site? Normally this will give guidance on what is expected. Normal practice would be to bond to local earth bar. Brass nuts and bolts are not as expensive as you may think, well M6 size anyway. I usually cringe when I see a roofing nut and bolt use in...

Buzz, try Electrical OM. I think they are a sponsor on here...........

Can anyone recommend a good free cad app

Another vote for ElectricalOM. I use this quite a lot, although I do export to Cad to attach to drawings. As has been said, you get what you pay for. If you charge accordingly then the costs will be more than covered. Free stuff is OK to cut your teeth and learning with, not everyone can...

Can anyone recommend a good free cad app

Smart Draw is not bad, very similar to autodesk. Currently using Autocad Lt myself and can not fault it. Obviously there is a cost involved!

Is City and Guilds 2396 Electrical Design qualification worth anything the real world?

Yes, it's opened a few doors for me. Specifically design doors. Congratulations on passing the 2396, not any easy qualification to obtain by a long way. You should now be using your new skill on a daily basis when adding in new circuits or installations.

    Discrimination Study

Can anybody explain the discrimination overlaps in the attached protection study? For example, a Live to earth fault in the downstream OCPD and how this may play out. I know the current settings are not ideal, but this is a legacy issue restricted by cable sizes etc!

Advice for getting into domestic electrical work with 18th and 2391-52?

IMHO I would stay where you are. As other's have said Automation is night and day from domestic or even commercial. If you want to progress look at an HNC/HND and go down the PLC Tech route. Must more interesting than lifting floor boards and tracking walls.

    Cable Marking System

Think outside the box, use these. https://www.cablecraft.co.uk/cablecraft-k-type-markers-black-on-yellow-on-reels Normally used on a carrier strip to identify cable, but have used these myself on 16 and 25mm conductors. Anything bigger will be a squeeze though!

    Uninsulated ring crimps

Heat shrink or Hellermann sleeves personally! Tape looks naff and either goes brittle or starts to peel off.
