    The new-ish ProjectEV Apex range

I seem to remember I did the latter as I didn’t go prepared for powering it. It was a faff. I’ve tended to install Zappi since if the customer can afford it, and leave it to other people if they can’t!

    Upstairs flat cutout

There is actually a separate unsheathed earth running with the cable. A good thought to have but earthing doesn't appear to be an issue. Correct thought. The cable in question is coming out of the supply side of the main fuse so the only upstream protective device is at the nearest transformer...

    Upstairs flat cutout

Yes. That is exactly what I was thinking and concerned about. It looks like the "someone" was the DNO. See post #7.

    Upstairs flat cutout

I'd decided it was going to be a street light, but I was wrong. I found it goes out of the building, along under the gutter, and back into the building. There was a locked box in the right area that looked like it could contain a CU for common area. As luck would have it there was a council...

    UK High Max Zs

This is one of my bug bears as it's very easily overlooked with temporary installations unless they are properly inspected and tested under BS7909. I'm happy to unpack. I'll turn up at a site and find lots of distribution boxes strung together with long cable between them, normally starting at...

What made you try that in the first place?

UK TT Earth Rod Submerged then Freezing

The main thing I'd be concerned about is the actual connection from the earth conductor to the clamp. I'd want to avoid that being underwater for long periods of time. We can't do much about the rod itself; the bottom line is it's going to get wet and it's going last as long as it lasts and we...

    Upstairs flat cutout

Yes, it is ex council. Mostly privately owned now. There is a common path along the back at ground level so it could be lit. I really need to look in daylight - if there is a streetlight it certainly doesn't work, it was pitch black out the back with lots of invisible ice so I didn't linger long.

Thanks James, I think my gut reaction is sound, it's just the braiding looks so similar to the tails!

    Upstairs flat cutout

Your thoughts please. Upstairs flat. This is supply side. It disappears through an air brick, and possibly goes to a shed downstairs but I've been there during daylight hours yet. There's a DNO-looking earth running with it. (The 1.5mm comes from the CU). Obviously whatever it feeds is...

Ballast for low pressure sodium street light bulbs

Ah, that explains the scarcity of them! It's looking like he has a choice between 1: something 2nd hand like this: PHILIPS 35W SOX STREET LIGHT LANTERN WITH NEW LAMP, HAS PHOTOCELL AND GEAR 240V | eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326317128377 if he REALLY wants to stick to this technology. 2...

Ballast for low pressure sodium street light bulbs

I have a customer that had an older street light with a 30W Phillips Sox bulb in in. It's an absolute pain to get to as it's mounted on a building very high with obstacles preventing easy ladder access and steps / ramps at ground level all around it. When it stopped working I offered a new LED...

Advice for registering for napit or neicc

The goal posts have moved several times so I'd suggest phoning both of the main schemes and asking them. I've always found Napit and NICEIC helpful on the telephone. The former was more responsive when I needed them to be, but it was the middle of lockdown at the time so it wasn't exactly normal...
