Just to add, I've just checked the one in the bathroom and that is on rechargeables (and has been for some time)

Thanks for the replies both. The battery level indicator only works to show there is a 'low battery', not to show a day by day level (unless I am missing something?!). I am not sure if the control panels are meant to work with rechargeable batteries... The label says "5 V d.c. max. 500...
