    SSE 3-Phase Upgrade Gone Wrong!

This needs a complaint letter, (i.e. put it in in writing) enclosing the evidence, and a list of all single phase equipment that received 400v with replacement / new value, plus any extra costs incurred. It's really important to stress that SSE energised the consumer side of this. That...

    which voltage proving unit?

Mine (Martindale PD90) gets used fairly rarely. You only need one if there isn't a source of power to check the tester still works after isolation, and even then I've usually already got my MFT out so I just do a quick IR test on it and check it lights up. While I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand two...

    5 amp earth leakage?

The level of my concern (and degree of care I'd take with any further steps) would depend on the loading of the installation at the time of this test. If it was doing this with a really light load I'd be very concerned and would stop and consider actions very carefully. Otherwise if I wanted to...

Dodgy trade pictures for your amusement! - 1 Million Views!

I turned up to change an outside light. This was the supply cable as I found it and the photograph to explain to customer why it needed to be a bigger job. Needless to say I took it out of service and ran a new cable. When the place was rewired I think no one fancied tackling the slate roof to...

Napit.. Do you still choose the job, or do they?

Going OT, but the funniest I've had was when a chap turned up to survey a house I was selling for the purchaser. This was in Oswestry. After coffee and cake we got chatting and randomly discovered two places our paths had vaguely crossed before: 1 - I'd looked around and came close to buying a...

Napit.. Do you still choose the job, or do they?

Depends on the assessor! I’m very lucky that I have the same top bloke come every time. I don’t tick that box for notifications as the current arrangement works well. He needs 3 addresses to keep the computer happy. I make it clear which one is easiest for us to attend and closest. Oddly enough...

    Meterel MFT ??

There are two ways to do that. Every MFT can do one of them. (using number 3 above) There is another way to do it if you have no mains present and not all testers have that test. I’ve needed that once in last 5 years, and I wouldn’t worry about that scenario. I understand it’s a lot of money...

    Meterel MFT ??

At first testing seems like a huge mysterious and complicated world, but at the end of the day testing boils down to 1) measuring high resistances using fun high DC voltages (250v or 500v) 2) measuring low resistances very accurately 3) measuring the resistance back the DNO transformer (live...

    Meterel MFT ??

I've got a similar Metrel tester (the 3125) as my spare which I dig out particularly for -phase rotation tests -3 point earth rod tests -PAT testing (the way the test leads work make it very efficient) Nothing wrong with them at all and I'd happily use one all week.

    UK What would you do?

Can we assume the sockets worked before the CU was changed? Looking at the standard of work, my armchair guess would be the live or CPC's were too short (they can be very short on an old Wylex with fuses) so they simply didn't reconnect them. My thoughts - 1) They obviously got the front on...

EICR, no 3a fuse for a fan

In general I'd rather end up with a shorter list of EICR findings that are actually significant than a long list with some of them being more or less irrelevant. If I code a missing 3A fuse for a fan it could lead to other findings that are much more important being taken less seriously.

    Why ? 120-130v old tester

I have a dangerous fascination for wanting to know how things work. In this case I got hold of some service manuals which for this age of gear are generally well written documents. One of the reasons I still use a 1553 tester is that I have the 15 series service manual. I've been trying to get...
