    Quinetic switch anomaly

So the receiver isn’t powered up at all? It hasn’t somehow got paired with the other receiver, and that’s causing a problem?

    Quinetic switch anomaly

There is no electrical connection to the switch at all, so issue must be with receiver. You said no water ingress into the box, but what about the light fitting? Was the receiver completely disconnected? Input and output? Or just unpaired from the switch? check your input and output...

Baffling electrical fault... Any hints very welcome.

Yea, an electrician will have better equipment to hunt down where the problem is, and more importantly, the experience to know what the readings are telling them. As with any work, the original connection to existing wiring would have been done in the easiest and least disruptive route. Which...

    Old UK wiring

So it looks like diy Dave has disconnected the socket to fit in his badly installed stove. Yes very likely a ring, but was just giving options. If that’s how the cables were left, then you’ve technically got 2 x radials… the ends of both stopping here. If it’s still the original 32A breaker...

    Old UK wiring

Not enough info. It could be a ring, or part of a radial…. But it might have been disconnected for a reason… just not done properly. If no local sparks are available, I know one not a hundred miles away….. 😉

    Old UK wiring

both bare conductors, like I say, shoul be sleeved and connected to the one joined to the back box. That’s the earth connection, and should be joined together for safety. Example… if those reds are live (very likely!) and the tape fell off… the live conductor within the red may touch the...

    Old UK wiring

The bare conductors should also be sleeved in green/yellow. We’re the 2 reds and 2 blacks connected together in the socket? If so, they should be connected together here too. Red to red, black to black. If this is how you’ve found it, I’d strongly advise getting an electrician in, as...

    Consumer Unit age?

original fuseboard (and possibly the wiring in the house) 70's to 80's.... Replacement circuit breakers, late 80's early 90's at a push. By the 90's we were fitting the standard 61008 circuit breakers on a DIN rail in a crappy plastic flimsy box. RCD's introduction was 2000's Give or take a...

Klein outlet tester and multimeter gave different voltage measurements

It may be that one device is calibrated, and much more accurate than a simple diy multimeter. The dimmer will not be a simple voltage reducer like they used to be with filament lamps…. They’re more electronic now, which can give different readings according to what voltage the tester itself...

Do most electricians understand economy 7?

We were told about off peak, different tariffs etc, but they were more for meter engineers employed by the suppliers, rather than electricians. We would pick up what we knew from being on the job, so to speak, and coming across different systems. What you need to determine, as mentioned...

Do most electricians understand economy 7?

So if there's no storage heaters, is there any point having a 2 rate tariff, if its only the water heating that was coming off it? Very little benefit that i can see. (considering your day rate may be elevated to counteract the lower night rate) What is the heating system now? A word with the...

Do most electricians understand economy 7?

ok.. so is the bottom immersion not supplied at all now? You still have storage heaters, or has all the off peak been disconnected? Old system, the entire left hand side of the board was energised at the off peak rate time, turning on the storage heaters and the bottom immersion, heating the...

Do most electricians understand economy 7?

There are a number of E7 configurations that it could be. One system only the space and water heaters are on low rate overnight, the timeclock switched in an entire second fuse board and only circuits from this board was reduced rate… Or, All electricity became low rate overnight. Not just...

Is this asbestos? It’s on my incoming mains supply at the bottom. I think it may be hessian and bitumen.

Additional. I deleted the OP duplicated post, but I realise it had extra information. Namely the fact that it’s a 1930’s house.

I don’t think it’s asbestos. You may be correct on hessian. However, I don’t think these earth clamps are suitable for attaching to the supply cable… I will let someone else confirm that.

    Oven circuit query.

Yes, it’s ok. The entire circuit, the cable, the socket are protected by the 13A fuse in the oven plug. There’s no need to change the 32A breaker to 16

    Fitting an induction hob

Also be aware that a 7.5kW will never take that full load. There are various discussions on here about how to calculate the design load, whether a hob on its own, or a hob/oven on same supply….. So you may find 32A is adequate for hob and oven, without moving the oven onto the general power...

New tech and fat fingers….. Yesterday was the day that no3 got to choose her classes for university. So many for her actual course, and so many elective classes to make up 120 credits across 2 semesters. The service opened at 9am, and everybody must have been trying to get on at the same...
