I did a job today and unpluged all equipment and tested the circuit @500v the guy said to me after i finished, why did you unplug everything and how come it took you so long to do it, the last sparky i had to do other sockets in my house did something with a test meter but didnt plug anything.

Would he of missed ir test out or done it @250 and left things plugged in ? I was always told never ir test at any voltage with equipment plugged in it could cost a lot of money.

I think you answered your own question.

I got called to a house that had just been PIR tested with a nice "we did this" label on the CU but 4 sockets were faulty one at the CU two in the livingroom and one in the kids bedroom with the neutral not connected touching the conduit backbox plus 2 pendants faulty that were so bad you could not put a lamp in one was in the lounge the other....................... Yep your right it was next to the DB.

Trust is a great thing but rule No1 in sparking is trust no one but yourself I am not saying this to be bitter but you will come across this type of thing every day and I just fix it and get paid i dont "slagg off" the last guy because thats what the customer expects and when they probe me on why did he or they not pick this up I say you will need to speak to them.

I never commented i said he must of been quicker then me and maybe pluged everything back in after. I dont like to say anything really because you never know what they had up against them problem wise. Its just hard sometime when you say because it needs to be done and they think your just trying to earn most cash off them.

Well we have visual Pirs,so it may be the way forward

He may have been a sight only operator, relying on the big bang theory
Visual installation tests dont take as long as the recomended variety, thats why he may have been quick

Its thought the test results are beamed back live into the brain, where they are stored in case a certificate was ever required, unlikely, but there is cover for this eventuality just in case

My advise is stick with the "old school" methods you are using

To be fair the previous guy may have just done a like-for-like on a socket accessory or something and just used IR test method 2. I wouldn't search around pulling every appliance and neon for such a job, and I doubt anyone else would.

But he just of easily could have not done any testing.

I'm just saying....

And you are so right in my opinion Rocker

The advise oldtimer gave was spot on, and my own was for him to forget what came before,do your own thing not pre judge what others do and to continue to do it right :)
