So my vauxhall combo was a disaster. Cost me £3500 in repairs in 6 months. Thats another story.

Invested in a nice vw caddy. But with posher newer van comes more likely to have some crackhead try and jimmy the door open.

It is an ex bt fleet van and has deadlocks on side and rear and full bulkhead. It also has an aftermarket alarm and immobiliser.

In your opinion do u reckon i should add extra locks? E.g the armourplate ones or even extra deadlocks?

How solid are deadlocks?!

Current deadlocks are good company - locks4vans and being ex-bt i imagine they are thatcham approved.

I park in my drive at night with rear doors backed up to house and car boxing in side door. Even leave in gear in case they try and cut handbrake cable to shift it forward! Paranoid or what. I bring tools in to jobs whenever i can but u hear about vans being done over in middle of the day more and more nowadays and just thinking if i stop at the cafe for lunch and come back to find £1000 worth of gear gone and about the same amount in damage!!

locks4vans are the uk's largest supplier of deadlocks and slamlocks, made in UK, and are Thatcham accredited. basically they're s*** hot. those combined with factory locks, and the after market alarm and immobiliser, there ain't much more you can do. tbh, all the security in the world isn't gonna stop someone that's hell bent on gaining entry. only slow them down at best. I wouldn't fit any more. the more security you have also, makes it look like you have stuff worth nicking.

Then mugging you to get the keys.

I also thought it said Dreadlocks. I'm trying to persuade Mrs Trev to let me grow them.
I think the idea of a middle aged white guy with dreads is pretty cool.
She's not having it so far.

To stop opportunist thieves your best bet is to prevent them seeing what you have in there that is worth stealing and get a decent steering wheel lock or similar.
Stopping a career criminal who has planned the job is a lot harder. If you make a van too hard to steal they will see it as a challenge and be more attracted to it.
They know where trackers are fitted and how to disable them, same for alarms or any other security device.

If you do fit a tracker then fit it yourself and don't tell anyone it's there or where you hid it in the vehicle.

I have an interest in vehicle security as I own a vehicle which is amongst the most popular among thieves, a landrover defender.
The opportunists will pick the easy targets as the older locks can be opened with a 5p coin.
The determined thieves will bring a hiab truck and just lift then away, them pop them in a shipping container and the trackers don't work.

I know of a few people who chain their landrovers down to metal anchor set in the concrete of their driveways.

I'm all for the tracker.

My favourite is to spend a few nights in the van with a decent sized dog.

In my experience the dog will make a racket while I come to, wake up and point out the road back to the mainland

Heard that argument about not having locks as it shows u have kit in your van. Not sure i agree!

For e.g if i have deadlocks, alarm, slamlock, hasp and padlock AND a van vault there is no way they will get to my tools in under 20 mins. Very unlikely they would go for my van.

They would just go pop the lock on a new style berlingo/partner. In London, i swear pretty much every third berlingo/partner i see has a popped lock. The lock design is awful on that van. (Happened to me so i know!)

I heard of one of those stories, a guy took his tester off the back of the van and locked it, walked from drive into house and when he went back for tools there was a guy already in the back of the van!!!

I never said don't have locks! Just don't go over the top with obvious security as it is an attraction to the hardened professionals who enjoy the challenge.

You can have all of those locks etc and they can still just pop the drivers door open and drive off with all your tools still safely locked in it.

Or alternatively a couple of minutes with a pair of tinsnips could have the whole side of a van open.

An armoured personnel carrier or an ex psni defender sounds your best bet Eddie!

london must be right rough these days

Defenders are one of the most attractive vehicles to thieves, especially special vehicles!

I've got the locks4vans dead locks and slam locks on my vauxhall combo, plus solid bulk head and cat 1 alarm and immobiliser.

I'm trying to decide whether to have a set fitted.

Anyone experienced rusting of panels where deadlocks have been fitted or due to swarf left in the bottom of doors?

Anyone fitted them themselves (as opposed to getting a professional to fit)?

I had mine professionally fitted and the bloke made a damn good job of it to be honest, very clean and tidy and was extremely careful and treated all the edges for rust etc too.

I've fitted quite a few over the years. Eventually the inevitable happens and you get some corrosion, but if you take your time and do a good job and treat any bear metal prior to fitting, you can't go far wrong.

Had some slam plates inc slam locks replacements handles fitted year old now and rusty. Life time warranty not worth a sh1te as they say remove them and send back so they can check them, leaving my van unable to be locked or even doors closed

What you want is a jump lead fed from a plug top , 230 v supply on the chassis , then see em yelp when they touch the van....LOL...

I spoke to an auto locksmith/van security expert on the phone the other day. He said the vw caddy is prob the most secure van anyway. It has deadlocks on the rear door anyway! With The locks4vsns deadlocks i have he said they would take ages to get in.

I was calling him about fitting more locks and he put himself out of the work by saying this!!

He said if i have any more locks they would think i was carrying gold bullion!!

John car keys is supposed to be very good around derby a mate had snapped his key in the lock and the guy came out.

Managed to remove old one and knocked him one up in a few mins out of the back of the van

Pis the caddy not the one with the hinges half way up back doors and the scum just bend the door in half to get in

No matter what security measures you install, no matter how many locks or immobilisers or alarms you fit, if they want it badly enough they'll get in. The best you can do is hope to delay them enough to make it not worth their while.
As I've said on another thread, a lock only keeps the honest people out
