Just logged on to this site useing my sons PC So I had to log on only to find a half page advert to train up to be an electrician with possible earnings of £50,475 pa now in my view I think this is a nonsense but at the same time anybody wanting to retrain as an electrician who searches for this site and the first thing they get hit with is You to can be an electrician and earn £50k a year.

This makes me very uneasy as I have no problem with anybody wanting to better themselves I just think these types of just add water and you are a spark adverts on this site is just plain double standards mmmmmmm comments welcome

Because Dan and the Mods will do nothing to deter them coming to the site as its the sponsors who pay the bills!

Re the claims of earning £50475 per year, based on having 4 weeks off per year and losing a further couple of weeks through bank holidays, and then working 37.5 hours per week, you'd need to clear £30.00 profit per hour, for every hour you work.

Me things theres some misselling claims heading their way, in the future

I think the forum has lost it's way slightly:95: I can't stand all the sponsors the irony in what they are advertising is slightly funny though.

The way I see it the owners of the board don't give a monkeys who posts on here, or for that case if posters are DIYers or wanna be sparks, as long as someone is posting something the sponsors are happy, and ker..Ching ££.

Now, I resent that comment wholeheartedly!!!

I have no say in what ads are put on here nor who sponsors the forum. Also, all the modding I do on here is me giving up my free time without any sort of benefit to myself at all!

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but yours sucks!!!

Didn't realise you owned or part owned the board Lenny, my 'opinion' was based on an owners objectives, not a moderators, if you have a share in the forum and have no say in sponsors I find that quite odd, none of my comments were derogatory to moderators so I find the offence you take as surprising TBH.

there does seem this awful strange boost to better it and get people involved, but yet they still advertise this junk, buut not their fault, they just want cash like you and i..

has anyone important ever made a cooment on these short courses

The forum is quite different to how it was when I first joined it, but its still free. And no doubt hosting costs etc have risen hugely.

What would you prefer, a reduced setup where you have to pay a fee to be a member, or a free forum with more members more replies and a lot of great opinions etc. As is always gonna be the case as the volume of good posts goes up so will the bad, some stuff I've read from so called sparks scares the hell out of me!

Maybe thats a no bad thing a smaller forum that wants to maintain standards opposed from being a free for all so my next question would be how much would it cost ?

We all know where the buck stops when it comes to forum sponsorship, with the owner.
I’ll admit I find the choice of some of the sponsors very questionable. Like every business it comes down to the bottom line of the profit/loss account.

The mod’s can advise but you can almost guarantee one thing, they’ll know nothing about new sponsors until they appear.

Having done some work with small forums you can get the forum software free (not Vbulletin mind but very good stuff), and the hosting relatively cheap. Last webhosting I paid for cost me $1 for a year!

If you took all the main contributors from this forum into a paid for private forum, how would it work though? The dire installs found thread would be buzzing and any help needed threads would be almost empty.

Seen this happen time and time again..Forum created for people in the know..forum explodes with numbers over a few years..forum starter can't afford or doesn't want to afford the up keep..and to be honest who blames them ?..Answer ? Sponsors and adverts..result...busy forum where the sponsors and advertisers hold the board by the curlys ..there is no way this board will ever ban DIYers or chances...why...posts make money..for sponsors...this is not a criticism of the board...more a reflection of the way we now have to live our life in the the cyber world ...

dont know if any one else noticed, the same advert was showing 34k a couple of weeks ago,now its back upto 50k,maybe the number of enquiries dropped,i mean no one could survive on 34k...

37k+ members here
600k+ posts

I think I've bought off 3 sponsors - Line, Meteor, Test Meter. If someone wants to be told they are going to get rich from being a sparky they will find that information out somewhere. If they dig a little deeper they will find the expensive course is (generally) a waste of time and to be a proper sparky will take years.

Quite happy that Northern Ireland is so small and these courses don't exist here. When I started out it wasn't too hard to get a decent apprenticeship, they are like gold dust now sadly - all the better for me I guess as what's coming up behind me as potential competition is less in numbers but bad for the industry.

I've belonged to a fair few professionals only forums and they're all a nightmare. There's no atmosphere or friendly banter, most of the members are so far up their own behinds they'll spend all night arguing over semantics and God help you if you ever write the abbreviation for kilowatt with a capital K, you'll never hear the last of it. They're not for me. I know that open forums also have their downsides but at least you've got some middle ground here with certain areas being professionals only. If the DIY posters annoy you then you can just ignore them.

As for sponsors, I just see them as necessary to pay the rent. The advertising set up here isn't that bad, the advertising sidebar has controls allowing it to be closed and in general I don't think the advertising detracts from the usability of the board. Some of the sponsors are very hands-on and there's a lot of value in being able to have questions or concerns about products or services addressed directly from the horses mouth as it were. If you have an issue about claims made by one out of the many sponsors I wouldn't see this as a good reason to tar them all with the same brush and change the business model of the whole forum board.

As one of the resident Electrical Trainee I would quite happily point out to anyone that believes such crap that I would have to work 415 days straight at 12 hours a day to get that kind of money. Been in this new job 5 weeks and I'm averaging 58 hours a week, good job I'm not taken in the spiel these companies put out and was under no illusion as to what I would have to do to earn a crust.
