I was speaking to a girl who works with the wife today, and she was telling me how when she brought her house she had an electrician in who tried ripping her off for £700, so I asked what had happened and this was the reply.
"We wanted a load of work done new cooker point, lighting and loads of other bits and pieces and this 'electrician turns up and says he cant do anything without fixing the earth as there is none (turns out she ment bonding) and there's other bits that he said wasnt right, - anyhow when he left we got another guy in who know how todo it, and he did it all for £200, and he never even mentioned the earth thing!!!!"

Dont know if the guy above had overpriced or not but stroll on, try do the job right and he looks like the crook!!!!

£200?? just the new cooker circuit would come close to that figure.

I had this the other day. Posted on here told them they needed bonding, havent heard anything since. Looked at me asif I was a blagger!

Exactly..... Customers now seem to think there's a big "bonding con" in this game. They seem to think it's an optional extra and in my experience find a (so called) spark that agrees!

I allways keep a load of the NICEIC guide to bonding sheets in my van they explain to the customer in plain english what needs to be done and doesnt look like your trying it on

Its much easier than trying to explain it yourself, as i personally tend to go overboard with the tech talk and they just stare blankly at me nodding their head wondering what in the world 'touch voltage' is. lol

If she can smell gas from her electrics I would be very concerned :).

Nail on the head, I do exactly the same start with the tech talk - then can see there eyes glazing over so I start to panick and end up talking gibberish.

until they make it law that every house, flat etc has to have correct bonding and 30mA rcd upfront by a certain date this job is not going to be any easier

lol, People honestly arent bothered long as its cheap and " works" who cares,if she could smell gas bet she wouldnt have call odd job barry.
Cheap and works...too true. Installed an extra CU for a new shower today, replacing original secondary rewirable CU and 6mm T+E feeding original shower. Last week I found the cct had the hob jointed under the landing floor from choc connectors. The t****r who did it said 'What do you expect for £80'. Found that niether the shower or the hob were earthed (earth from feed left too short for connection in choc). On testing hob cct at 45amp switch, incomming, 2 screw terms, 3 out of 4 screws missing (none in live term). Changing switch tommorow. With bonding and shower fan, the total cost won't be far off a grand. £80......?
